02/2015: Farewell 2014 – Welcome 2015 at the 2014 PELUM Staff Reflection

BY JOSEPHINE AKIA, PROGRAM MANAGER Posted February 2015 MUKONO. As it’s been the custom, PELUM Uganda always ends the year in style. This year, PELUM Uganda staff convened at Colline Hotel Mukono for their annual staff reflection. From the 16th to the 19th of December, the staff were taking stock of what major achievements had been realized, challenges encountered and means of enhancing 2015 interventions to meet the expectations of the donor, address the gaps that the member organizations are facing and provide practical ecological land use management practices to the smallholder farmers. This was done through critical assessment of each of the key result areas led by the respective Program Officers. It was also a time for management to strategically design and re-activate the motivation buds of the staff. This was led by the Country Coordinator, Mrs. Stella Grace Lutalo with her enchanting motivational quotes and a session on personal branding and excellence. One that captivated me most was “Be yourself because everyone else is already taken.” This made me think about the kind of value addition each of us- the Staff have to bring to PELUM Uganda using our unique selling points, strength and expertise. Stella also did a de-brief on intercultural cooperation, a training she attended with support from Bread for the World, one of PELUM Uganda’s development partners in Kenya. It was interesting to learn that each one of us is either prejudiced for or against everything in society and this affects and reflects on how we work and interact if not dealt with clearly. This means that we should be open to learn and never quick to judge.

To climax the event was the awarding of staff certificates. Unlike the normal certificates of excellence, and participation, these certificates are a drawing of each staff (by the selves) and the other staff write about on it what their colleague was in 2014. In addition were; team building events such as games, fire place storytelling, staff exchange of Christmas gifts, appreciating part time staff and bidding fare de well to the volunteers of 2014 (Lawrence) over the last staff dinner and cake cutting. We would like to appreciate PELUM Uganda Country Board, Management, donors, Member organizations, service providers, staff and partners that have positively impacted and supported PELUM Uganda and enabled her realize her dreams. Together, we Network for a greener Africa!
