Kampala, Uganda – As Uganda celebrated the Uganda Parliamentary Nutrition Week and World Nutrition Day, the government renewed its pledge to advance sustainable agricultural practices that enhance food security and improve nationwide nutrition.
Government Champions Agroecology and Resilient Food Systems
Speaking on behalf of the Prime Minister, Hon. Dr. Peter Lokeris emphasized the government’s dedication to agroecology and resilient food systems as key strategies for long-term health and development.
“We must support agroecology and local food systems that honor our cultural roots while preserving our environment,” Dr. Lokeris stated, highlighting the role of sustainable farming in safeguarding Uganda’s heritage and ecosystems.
The government also stressed the need for climate-resilient food systems to mitigate shocks from climate change, pests, and other disruptions. “Investing in resilient food systems ensures consistent access to nutritious food, even in challenging times,” he added.
Multi-Sectoral Approach to Nutrition and Development
Dr. Lokeris outlined a holistic strategy integrating agriculture, health, education, and environmental policies to improve nutrition and rural development. This approach ensures coordinated efforts across sectors to achieve sustainable outcomes.
Policy and Legal Reforms to Strengthen Nutrition
Uganda is prioritizing legal frameworks to bolster food security, including the fast-tracking of the Food and Nutrition Bill. This legislation aims to institutionalize sustainable food practices and protect citizens’ rights to diverse, nutritious, and culturally appropriate diets.
National Agroecology Strategy Nears Completion
A significant milestone is the near-finalization of the National Agroecology Strategy, led by the Ministry of Agriculture and PELUM Uganda. This strategy will promote sustainable farming, enhance food diversity, and tackle malnutrition at its roots.
Parliamentary Nutrition Week 2025: Empowering Better Nutrition
The Uganda Parliamentary Alliance on Food and Nutrition Security (UPAFNS), in collaboration with PELUM Uganda and partners, organized Nutrition Week 2025 under the theme “Empowering Better Nutrition for the People.” The event aimed to:
Raise awareness on malnutrition,
Strengthen food and nutrition policies,
Mobilize community action for healthier diets.
A Sustainable Future for Uganda
Uganda’s renewed focus on agroecology and climate-smart agriculture reflects a strategic shift toward environmentally friendly, culturally rooted practices. By investing in policy reforms, community engagement, and resilient food systems, the government is laying the foundation for a healthier, self-sufficient, and sustainable future.
This commitment not only addresses immediate nutrition challenges but also aligns with Uganda’s broader goals of climate resilience, sustainable development, and intergenerational well-being.
